The Queens College Library is offering two workshops to support faculty transitioning to an online environment:

Getting Started with Qwriting

Monday, March 16, 2020 • 3pm–4:30 pm
Rosenthal Library Room 227
Due to popular demand, this is now a virtual workshop hosted on Google Meet

In this workshop, faculty will learn the bare minimum to create a course site that works. Faculty should bring digital copies of a syllabus and course schedule. They can expect to leave with the basic structure of a working class site. You will not unleash your creativity, and we will not cover anything beyond the basic skills required to convert a syllabus and course schedule into a digital learning environment using QC’s WordPress platform.

Collaborative Annotation

How do you discuss the reading if you can’t meet in person? In this workshop on “Collaborative Annotation,” Emerging Technologies and Digital Scholarship Librarian Leila Walker will show how collaborative annotation tools can help cultivate critical reading habits and develop close reading skills, and indicate where students might need extra guidance to understand the material.

Faculty can expect to leave the workshop with a basic understanding of the tools and a draft lesson plan involving collaborative annotation.

Leila Walker is the Emerging Technologies and Digital Scholarship Librarian. She oversees the creation and development of resources to support digital scholarship at Queens College, and invites partnership with faculty, staff, and students on their digital projects. In coordination with the Center for Teaching and Learning, she seeks out new opportunities to advance digital pedagogy, and leads and organizes training workshops. In 2018, she spearheaded the Open Educational Resources and Digital Literacy Faculty Fellowship, a grant-funded program that guides faculty in the responsible creation of OER courses. In 2018-2019, she is leading the OER initiative at Queens College, and providing library instruction for English, Drama, and Comparative Literature courses while Nancy Foasberg is on sabbatical. Leila has a PhD in British romantic literature from the CUNY Graduate Center. Prior to joining the Queens College Library faculty, she taught in the English department and served as the Research Associate for Shelley and his Circle, a multi-volume scholarly publication of manuscript materials held in the Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle. She held a Council on Library and Information Resources Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2015-2016. Her research interests include the digital humanities, British romantic literature, pedagogy, scholarly editing, and the history of the book.
