Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Queens College Libraries (FOL) is a volunteer organization with a twofold purpose: sponsoring cultural events for the QC community and raising funds to donate to the Queens College Library to provide services, books, and equipment the library would otherwise be unable to afford. In the past, the Friends have sponsored celebrations in honor of the anniversaries of Yeats, Mozart, Whitman, Rogers and Hammerstein, and Bessie Smith. The Friends have also sponsored a trio of programs celebrating Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams, and Henry Purcell. Other events sponsored by the FOL have included National Library Week programs on the 100th anniversary of the birth of F. Scott Fitzgerald, concerts and lectures commemorating Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms, a faculty lecture recognizing the 100th anniversary of the birth of William Faulkner, and, in collaboration with the Music school, a celebration of the centennial of George Balanchine.
Over the years the Friends have provided endowments to the Library and funded a variety of special needs, including the preservation of the Ford Theatre playbill for the night that President Lincoln was assassinated and restoring the Hallum will of 1759, and have donated funds to the Reserve Library to purchase textbooks for students in financial need, equipment for the Educational Curriculum Center, books on multicultural topics and English as a Second Language, and computers for public access to the Internet. Friends of the Library have also funded a lounge for students on level 4 of Rosenthal Library.
Membership is open to all at two levels:
- Life: $500
- Patron: $50
Members at the Patron level receive borrowing privileges for a six month period excluding database remote access. Life members receive continuing borrowing privileges. Membership forms are available at the Rosenthal Library Borrowing desk. A Friends membership will be issued at Borrowing desk upon completion of an application form (please present a valid government issued I.D.) and the successful processing of your Friends fee (cash or check accepted).
